Nominated for: BEST New American
The story of Crazy Water begins in 2002 when Magister and Betzhold drive past a tavern on S. 2nd St. and spot a "for rent" sign in the window, Magister said. The two were already operating one restaurant, The Fork in Cedarburg.
"We wanted to come into the city and we didn't have a lot of money," she said. "And we'd heard that Walker's Point was an up-and-coming place."
The two did a major cleanup of the old bar - formerly the popular Zur Krone - and opened, as Magister put it, "on tax day - April 15, 2002." Like the Social, Eve, Trocadero and some other new restaurants in the city, the concept was to serve fresh, creative food in a relaxed atmosphere.
The 45-seat restaurant became so popular that the two eventually abandoned their Cedarburg operation. (It's now Camille's Trattoria.) And as the two work their way toward the restaurant's second anniversary this spring, Crazy Water continues to draw a crowd.
Some of the appeal is a charm characteristic of many establishments in Walker's Point. Diners at Crazy Water sit at linen-covered tables with fresh flowers, where they can soak up the spirit of the early 20th century in the form of vintage hardwood floors and classic tin ceiling. An interesting array of compelling contemporary portraits keeps the eye busy while diners wait for their food.
